Maedot (Amharic for second chance) is more than just a football team—it’s a lifeline. Born from a vision to uplift young people growing up around the dumpsite in Addis Abeba, Maedot offers them something they rarely get in their environment: purpose, belonging, and hope. In a place where survival often takes priority over dreams, Maedot opens the door to a future filled with possibility.
The team trains three times a week, not just to sharpen their skills, but to be insured and to feel safe and encouraged. This regular rhythm of training builds consistency, community, and confidence—something the neighborhood cannot provide on its own. Each practice session becomes a powerful escape from the hardship of their surroundings, creating space to dream and grow.
The Summer Camp: A Life-Changing Experience
The Maedot Summer Camp is more than a getaway—it’s a transformative journey. It’s a rare opportunity for these young athletes to step outside the limits of their daily lives and experience a week full of learning, mentorship, fun, and growth. Through sport, team-building, workshops, and new friendships, the camp will give them an unforgettable experience that builds self-worth and sparks new dreams. For many, it will be their first time away from the dumpsite—and a glimpse into a life they didn’t know was possible.
That’s why we’re dreaming of bringing them to a beautiful retreat center in Debre Zeit, a city 1h from Addis Abeba. The compound, which regularly hosts kids programs, is equipped with a small football court, a great kitchen and a meeting room. It is the perfect place to facilitate this team.
